In today’s technology era, various companies heavily depend on the data collected through different applications. Some common use cases understand the business dynamics, customer analytics, the geographical superiority of the businesses, and much more. Various companies look for a specialized person who can easily manage their Database and provide services accordingly.

It ensures that all the Data is securely stored, processed, and protected from loss or corruption. This article will discuss some of the essential roles and responsibilities of a Data Administrator that you look forward to while hiring.

What is a Database Management system?

Before getting into details of Database Administrator, let’s discuss a bit about Database Management System.

A Database Management system is a collection of Data and various small programs to manage it. Companies can store, retrieve, modify, or extract data from a Database. Common functions are CREATE, UPDATE, MANAGE, RETRIEVE, and STORE the data. For example, if a company wants to store data about its customers and the products they buy, it can leverage a DBMS ( Database Management System).

Roles and Responsibilities of DBMS Administrator.

In this part, we will discuss the roles and operational responsibilities of the database administrator. A data administrator needs to handle various tasks, such as given below.

  • a complete working plan for the organization. They meet the employees and co-workers to discover some of the key problems and try to find a solution.
  • Assists with high-quality data study and analysis. Also, they handle a complete database and data-driven components efficiently.
  • Conduct research at regular intervals to find more about enhancements and upcoming products. Accordingly, they plan the upgradation and remodelling of the existing DBMS software.
  • Collaborates with the Network Coordinator and works with them.
  • Provides various services based on the requirements and works on the improvements based on the recommendations of other co-workers.

Operational Responsibilities of Database Administrator.

Make sure that the DBMS and data are highly secured.

One of the common operational roles of dba is to analyze the weaknesses of the DBMS software and the company’s overall data storage architecture to minimize security flaws. No system is hundred per cent immune to security flaws, but implementing the correct strategies could reduce the risk.

If any breach happens, a dba can consult and take action accordingly.

Database Recovery and Backup

A database administrator often creates BackupBackup and recovery plans based on the latest industry standards. Also, they ensure that all the steps are aligned and completed. Creating a Database backup is expensive sometimes, so DBA needs to talk and encourage a management team to take necessary precautions and preserve data.

If there is any failure, they need to use the existing backups to fetch the latest state of the data without any loss of the information. Every failure has a specific type that needs a tailor-made strategy.

Authentication

Whenever a new employee joins or leaves, DBA needs to sync the roles and access the Database accordingly. Based on the role, a DBA can set up the roles for specific permissions instead of giving full rights to edit, view, or modify data.

Capacity Planning

There can be data of different sizes depending upon the use case. Managing the space and optimizing it is one of the operational responsibilities of the DBA. A DBA analyses the data requirement based on which It creates a database and some extra capacity to handle the additional data when needed.

Troubleshooting.

Database Administrators troubleshoot and fix the bugs or errors in the Database Management Software. Based on the troubleshooting result, they take further action, whether to restore or delete the corrupted data based on the damage caused. Data is quite important; hence A DBA needs to take quick action and recover the Data.

Different Types of DBA

There are different roles of DBA available. One of the general roles of DBA is generic DBA. Generic DAB is responsible for working on all the Database Administration work. But there are several other roles that companies look for while hiring. Some of the common DBA types are listed below.

  • Building a model for logical data
  • Creating a Database Model into a prototype
  • Applying concepts like normalization to Optimize the Database
  • Work on BackupBackup and restore strategies to implement a new database in case of security hacks.

Cloud Based DBA

With cloud technologies becoming quite common to store data, a new role is created for those specialized in cloud technologies like AWS and google cloud. They help with the migration of the organization’s data to the cloud. Also, they leverage different cloud-based databases like AWS and Azure.

A cloud DBA should know different cloud services and their providers, such as How to implement databases, Secure them and take regular backups. Also, they should know fault avoidance and cost management.

  • System DBA

System DBA works on different technical details instead of catering to a business’s needs by designing a database. They are responsible for handling how the Database is modified, configured, and installed. Some of the common Tasks performed by System DBA are given below.

  • Configuring the Memory Management for Database
  • Fix the database issues
  • Install and regularly update new versions.
  • Configure the basic parameters of DBMS software installed.

Summary
